Heart Pine

Beautiful and durable Heart Pine is the “heart” of the Southern Long Leaf Pine.  It differs from other pines due to tight growth ring patterns, high resin content, and its unique red amber color.  Due to its tall straight trunks, it was used for canoes, ship masts, structural timber and in other early settlements to construct four out of every five houses in the deep south.  This includes the Trasher Warehouse and extends to the USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”), whose keel is made from one single timber, in addition to its decks.

The history of this southern treasure is a twenty-three-hundred-year odyssey that is depicted in three panels with narrative, graphics and photos.  It is located on the southern covered porch at the museum.
